The fantasy that Walter Cronkite represented an ideal of dispassionate, authoritative news reporting is so alluring that even the anchormanâ??s long-ago birthday has become an occasion for honoring his â??untouchable aura of authority.â?
The Smithsonian Institutionâ??s â??Around the Mallâ? blog did just that yesterday, in a post that recalled Cronkite, who was born November 4, 1916, as â??an anchor who [spoke] with the authority of a religious leader or founding father.â?

Oh, spare us the hyperbole.
