Race and Media Bias: Then and Now

 

This week marks the 20th anniversary of the Los Angeles riots. For me it’s an extraordinary time for reflection upon one of the most significant events in our country’s history. For the last few days, my colleagues and I have been trading stories of dodging bullets and jumping flames in the midst of urban chaos.  On April 29, 1992, a jury had just acquitted four white LAPD officers in connection with the beating of a black motorist named Rodney King.  There I was, as a reporter for the CBS station in L.A., at ground zero.  It was nothing short of a war zone, but there was never any question that it was my duty to report and document the events.
