1979: The Year Modern Jihadism Began

One day — and this is important to remember, amidst all the clangor of an American presidential cycle — the war on terror will end.

 

The radical Islamic ideology that motivated the attackers in San Bernardino and Paris isn’t a permanent, organic feature of the Muslim community. If it were, we would have been experiencing Islamic terrorism for decades, even centuries. Whenever and wherever an Islamic population was present, there would be jihadi violence. But there hasn’t been.

 

The phenomenon we now know as radical Islamic terrorism had its beginning in a single year: 1979.
