Obama's Red Herring on Crusades

The president's words at the recent National Prayer Breakfast have been called “patronizing” by one opinion writer, exhibiting a lack of “wisdom” by another, while one writer noted that “President Obama would not mention Islam by name but he did bring judgment on the Christian past, with specific reference to the Crusades.” Those are three of the more measured responses. Many others displayed nothing less than stunned and virulent anger.

 

The firestorm of verbal protest was generated when President Barack Obama said, in reference to Islamic extremism, “Lest we get on our high horse and think this is unique to some other place, remember that during the Crusades and the Inquisition, people committed terrible deeds in the name of Christ. In our home country, slavery and Jim Crow all too often was justified in the name of Christ. …So this is not unique to one group or one religion. There is a tendency in us, a sinful tendency that can pervert and distort our faith.”
