In the wake of tragedy, sports often act as a palliative, providing a much-needed distraction; but the sports world has never been immune from its own disasters. The first anniversary of the Boston Marathon bombing just passed, and coming up on May 4 is the anniversary of the 1949 Superga air disaster that claimed the lives of the Turin professional soccer team, popularly known as Il Grande Torino.
In chronological order, this list looks back at 10 of the Worst Sports Disasters, limited to those where the main tragedy was accidental. That means the Boston Marathon is not on this list, as well as the Munich massacre in 1972, both of which were the acts of terrorism.
