Seismic Trade That Changed Hockey History

When former Los Angeles Kings owner Bruce McNall first brought up the idea of trading for Wayne Gretzky, he recalls that Edmonton Oilers owner Peter Pocklington reacted as if he had just stepped into the theater of the absurd.

"When I would bring it up, he would laugh it off, and blow me off," McNall recalled.

 

Even when Pocklington called unexpectedly to say he was interested in trading Gretzky, McNall said he presumed his chances of landing Gretzky were "a long shot, a pipe dream."

 

"All the way through the deal, and through the press conference I wasn't certain it was going to happen," McNall recalled. "When Peter said he wanted to talk to Wayne privately, I was sure they were going to pull the plug on it."
