What Drove Civil War Unit to Mutiny?

It's early April 1864, more than four months after the Tribune declared Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's victory at Chattanooga, Tenn., a Rebel Waterloo, and the Civil War is far from over. Confederate forces have proved resilient. Instead of retreating "all the way to Atlanta," the Rebs kept fighting in Tennessee. And Maj. Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest's successful raid north into Kentucky in March showed that the South still had plenty of fight left in it.

So news of another "disaster," this one from Maj. Gen. Nathaniel Banks' Red River Campaign in Louisiana, was met with disgust and outrage.
