It's a familiar pattern in the Clinton administration: When something goes terribly wrong, you can usually find Janet Reno's fingerprints at the scene. Last week, the Justice Department not only had to virtually surrender in its legal fight with former Los Alamos scientist Wen Ho Lee, but had to hear the presiding federal judge declare that its handling of the case had "embarrassed our entire nation."
He wasn't the only one who felt that way. President Clinton, who knows something about being hounded by overzealous prosecutors, said he was "quite troubled" by how Lee was treated. But his chief law enforcement official refused to apologize. Reno assured reporters, "I'm not embarrassed." Maybe she is constitutionally incapable of embarrassment.
