His appearance was innocuous enough. According to witnesses he had long hair, was clean-shaven, tall and well-built — looking a little like the actor Anthony Quinn — and wore a light, open-necked shirt with a jacket.
Moments later the man made his intentions clear. He aimed a machinegun at a crowd of 70 anti-Gaddafi protesters gathered below and opened fire.
One bullet hit WPc Yvonne Fletcher, who fell to the ground clutching her stomach with a “look of total surprise on her face”.
Her colleagues carried her to a side street, where an ambulance arrived within minutes but she was beyond hope from the instant the bullet struck her.
As Pc Fletcher drifted in and out of consciousness, she told Pc John Murray that her “tummy was hurting”. Pc Murray, who has continued to campaign for justice for the Fletcher family, replied: “Don't worry. We'll get them.”
