78,000-Year-Old Cave Reveals Secrets

A group of archaeological researchers have found a remarkable cave site in Kenya that illustrates the history of human tools from the early days of hunter-gathers, dating back 78,000 years, through the Iron Age. The cave, known as Panga ya Saidi, shows how humanity's tools evolved alongside the species itself.

Panga ya Saidi is located in an area of uncharted Kenyan coastline along the Indian Ocean. Scientific analyses of archaeological plants, animals and shells from the cave, led by the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Human History, show that people used it for a long time, even as the area surrounding it underwent dramatic environmental change. A source of stability for thousands of years, Panga ya Saidi and the artifacts within reflect tens of thousands of years of gradual human change.
