James (Whitey) Bulger, born Sept. 3, 1929, grew up in a housing project in South Boston, the second of six children. His first arrest was at the age of 13 for delinquency.
Mr. Bulger was arrested in 1956 for robbing banks in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Indiana. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison but served nine, three of them at Alcatraz.
