The Beast of Budapest

On the evening of Oct. 23, 1956, rapidly escalating political tensions in Budapest, the capital of Soviet-occupied Hungary, touched off like a powder keg outside the Radio Budapest building. A delegation of pro-reform demonstrators had gone to the station to broadcast to the nation its demands for free elections and the immediate removal of Soviet troops.
