A large fire destroyed Brazil's National Museum Sunday (Sept. 2), ruining one of Latin America's most venerable cultural and research insitutions and the 200-year-old home of more than 20 million artifacts, according to its website.
No one has been reported injured or killed in the blaze itself, but a number of priceless artifacts are believed to have been destroyed, according to CNN. The most famous of those artifacts was Luzia, the 11,000-year-old skull of a Paleoindian woman whose remains are the earliest discovered in the Americas.
