For two hectic weeks under the baking sun of the French Riviera the style and sophistication of European cinema meets the star-studded glamour and shameless ballyhoo of Hollywood, served amid enough champagne to float one of the dazzling superyachts anchored in the bay. And for nearly 75 years Cannes has been the venue for the first screenings of what would become some of the greatest classics of cinema, and helped launch some of the industry's most illustrious careers.
