Star Trek, Cold War, and Lessons in Cowboy Diplomacy

Two great powers have warily stared each other down from across a vast, deadly space for generations. One side is for the most part benevolent, open, and free, offering people the power of self-determination. The other is secretive and militaristic, constantly seeking territorial expansion using force and subjugation.

For generations, they have competed for the souls of all peoples, using technology, politics, culture, and propaganda to prove their superiority over their opponents. When that has failed, they have used proxies to fight their battles, but they have always been careful not to engage each other directly. Each side knows their terrible military power would destroy them both if brought to bear.
