Of the 49 members of the Lewis and Clark expedition, thirty-seven were United States soldiers. Fourteen soldiers were recruited from U.S. garrisons visited by Lewis and Clark as they journeyed toward their jumping off point; twenty-one other men enlisted for the expedition. The twelve civilian members of the expedition were York, who was Lewis' slave, Sacajawea and 10 boatmen. 1
While en-route to the Missouri, Lewis and Clark made several stops. At Clarksville, Indiana in October 1803, nine volunteers enlisted in the Army as members of the Corps of the Discovery. Two, Charles Floyd and Nathaniel Pryor were appointed sergeants. 2
