Stop Blaming Buckner for Red Sox Choke

As our plumber pulled a 60-year-old baseboard heating unit away from one of our living-room walls, out popped Bill Buckner.

Not in person, of course, but on a Topps Chewing Gum baseball card.

Yes, there he is, in that familiar left-handed hitting pose, and wearing a Chicago Cubs uniform. Given the fact that the card's listing of his career stats ends with 1977, we can deduce that it somehow got lodged behind the heating unit circa 1978, when our two teen-age sons were into collecting baseball cards.

The plumber, who was helping with a re-do of our living room, quickly let me know that he has a firm grasp on Boston Red Sox history.
