Suez Crisis Marked Death of British Empire

reat Britain had emerged victorious after the Second World War. Triumph and relief swept the nation on the 8th May 1945. Britain could return back to normal, to its leading position in the world as the ruler of the waves. However, despite the jubilant atmosphere, doubt and fear lay at the back of the people's minds.


Britain had, in every regard except militarily, suffered a defeat. It was bankrupt, dependent on the economic presence of the United States and had lost its imperial supremacy at the hands of the Japanese.
