Unanimously elected our first president, George Washington nonetheless knew the union was a fragile one.

He went on two goodwill tours — through New England for a month in late 1789 and a week in August 1790, then the South for 3 ¹/â?? grueling months in mid-1791 — to pitch the importance of a strong federal government directly to the people.

So as not to burden everyday citizens (and to avoid the politics that came with accepting personal invitations), Washington resolved to stay only in public inns at a time when America's hospitality industry had barely evolved from dirt floors.
