Craig Breedlove surpassed 600 miles an hour today in regaining the world land speed record in two runs on the Utah salt flats. The 28-year-old Californian drove his jet-powered, fourwheeled Spirit of America at an average speed of 600.601 miles an hour with clockings of 593.178 miles an hour and 608.201 miles an hour over a measured mile.
His official speed was calculated on the basis of the elapsed time for the combined runs, as required by the Federation Internationale de L'Automobile, which certifies international racing events and world records. It was the fifth time since August, 1963, that he had laid claim to the title of fastest man on wheels. He had been the first to crack 400 and 500 miles an hour.
