Balkan Nation to Change Its Name

The Balkan nation Macedonia ratified a U.S.-backed deal with Greece to change its name to “North Macedonia,” opening up a path to membership of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization and the European Union.

Macedonia's parliament on Friday gave final approval to the agreement with Greece, which settles a long-festering diplomatic dispute between the two countries. Greece for years insisted that the name “Macedonia” belongs exclusively to its own northern region and vetoed its smaller neighbor's bids to hold membership talks with the EU and NATO.
