Dale Earnhardt was where he had waited 20 years to be when his black Chevrolet Monte Carlo rolled slowly around the track on the final lap of Sunday's Daytona 500.

This time, there would be no low-flying seagull smashing into his windshield. This time, there would be no running out of gas, no sharp debris tearing a hole in his tire on the final turn. This time, Dale Jarrett was nowhere in sight.

This time, none of those past curses would deny Earnhardt, a seven-time Winston Cup champion, from parking in the winner's circle at the Daytona International Speedway on stock car racing's biggest day.
