Original Account of AJC Editor's Kidnapping

ATLANTA, Feb. 21—The editorialâ?page editor of The Atlanta Constitution was kidnapped last night and today sent a tapeâ?recorded message to his paper saying that his abductors wanted $700,000 in ransom.

J. Reginald Murphy, the editor, said his abductors described themselves as members of the American Revolutionary Army who were displeased with what they described as the “too leftist and too liberal” American news media.

Mr. Murphy, 40 years old, has taken moderate stands on paper once famed for Southern liberalism. He said his captors had told him they were “quite strong” all across the United States and that “they intend in the future to engage in guerrilla warfare throughout the country.”
