Nixon's China Visit Had Consequences

The consequences of Richard Nixon's historic visit to China are complex and multi-layered. It would not be an exaggeration to say that, in many ways, the visit changed the tide of history, with ramifications both short- and long-term.

On February 21, 1972 Richard Milhous Nixon became the first American head of state ever to set foot on the Chinese Mainland when he began a six-day visit to China during which he met with Mao Zedong in Beijing.

The importance of this visit might seem overstated to some today, but if anything, it is rather understated.
