We May Never Know True Fate of TWA 800

Last Tuesday marked the 22nd anniversary of the crash of TWA Flight 800, a Boeing 747 which exploded and crashed into the ocean only 12 minutes after leaving Kennedy Airport on an overnight flight to Paris on July 17, 1996.All 230 aboard were killed. Steve Snyder, the senior captain, was from Stratford, and Richard Campbell, the senior flight engineer, lived in Ridgefield. Seven of the passengers were also Connecticut residents.I reported on the crash and investigation for the Fairfield County Weekly and then for the Village Voice. In the early days it seemed very likely that a terrorist bomb was responsible.
