How World War I Shaped US-Canada Border

The U.S.-Canada border changed dramatically during the First World War. Prior to August 1914, the international boundary had been -- for the most part -- a porous, a fluid zone of friendly economic and social interchange. After the outbreak of the war, however, the border steadily transformed into a high-security surveillance area where citizens of Canada and the United States encoutered the state like never before.
