Chariot Unearthed in Pompeii

Officials at the Pompeii archaeological site in Italy announced Saturday the discovery of a large ceremonial chariot with four wheels.

The “extraordinary find” emerged intact from the excavation of the suburban villa of Civita Giuliana, beyond the walls of the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, which was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius volcano in 79 A.D.

The discovery “is unique for Italy,” said Massimo Osanna, the outgoing director of the park and the scientific head of the excavations, according to the Italian news agency ANSA.
