Germany's GSG 9: 'To Protect the Fatherland'

GSG 9 was formed in the aftermath of the Munich massacre. The tragic moments on September 5, 1972, in Munich, during the Olympic Games changed the world of law enforcement. Germany suffered the worst terrorist attack in its history. The German police were not prepared for such types of attacks so the politicians and security forces decided to form a new unit, especially for counter-terrorism. That was the day when the GSG 9 was born. It officially happened on September 26, 1972.
The GSG 9 is an abbreviation for Grenzschutzgruppe 9 der Bundespolizei which means Border Protection Group 9 of the Federal Police. Their motto has become a phrase To protect the Fatherland.
