What Was the Sand Creek Massacre?

In the early morning of November 29th, 1864, nearly 700 men from the 1st and 3rd Colorado volunteer regiments descended on the peaceful village of Sand Creek and killed more than 230 Cheyenne and Arapaho men, women, and children. The event was a cold-blooded massacre, the culmination of years of abuses by the federal government towards Native nations.
In this playlist, we both remember the Sand Creek Massacre, honor those who were lost, and explore how the events were recast and rewritten over time. History is a complicated, malleable thing, and how we remember our history is a part of our history.
