'Unaccounted For' WW II Soldier Now 'Buried at Sea'

CLEVELAND, Ohio — A Cleveland soldier has officially been declared “buried at sea” in the sinking of the USS Indianapolis at the end of World War II, the single largest sea disaster in U.S. history.
The Navy last week announced the change in status from “unaccounted for” to “buried at sea” for Seaman 2nd Class Albert Raymond Kelly of Cleveland, as well as SSML3 Angelo Anthony Sudano of Niles and 11 other sailors. They were among the 879 who died when the Indianapolis was sunk by two Japanese torpedos on July 30, 1945, two weeks before the end of the war.
Capt. Robert McMahon, director of the Navy Casualty Office, said in a news release that bringing closure to families of those lost at sea is a “solemn duty and obligation.”
