Russia: The Lessons Of History

Things are not going well for Ukraine, despite the considerable military and economic aid provided by its allies since the Russian invasion started – €160bn as of mid-February this year. The army faces serious problems. Since its failed counteroffensive last summer, Russian troops have continued to gain ground. The technical superiority of Western weaponry has not made up for a shortage of munitions. Russia’s demographic advantage is also evident. US military aid may continue to be held up in the Senate for some time. Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has said he could ‘solve [the war] in 24 hours’ and would not give ‘a single penny’ to Ukraine if elected.
