This year marks the 80th anniversary of the Normandy invasion, also known as D-Day. The operation is known as the largest amphibious invasion in military history, involving 150,000 land, air and sea troops of the Allied armies.
While the date isn't a federal holiday, it is celebrated by many yearly as a way to honor the thousands of Allied soldiers who were injured or killed in the process of achieving victory against odds stacked against them.
