Strong Vincent “Didn’t Give an Inch” at Gettysburg

In the front rank of Trinity College’s veterans is Strong Vincent, Class of 1858. On the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg, he rushed his brigade to occupy Little Round Top just ahead of a Confederate thrust—and held the ground in a desperate struggle. Badly wounded, he died five days later.

In mid-June 1863, the Army of Northern Virginia under General Robert E. Lee, 75,000 strong, advanced into Pennsylvania. This movement was met by the Army of the Potomac when the blue and gray armies collided near Gettysburg.  At the conclusion of the confused fighting on the first day, July 1, the Union held high ground south of the town.
