This Mistake Transformed Young Washington into a Leader

In the summer of 1754, 22-year-old George Washington was deep in the wilderness of what is now southwestern Pennsylvania. He had been sent by Virginia’s colonial lieutenant governor, Robert Dinwiddie, to assert British territorial claims in a contested frontier after the French refused to abandon forts they had constructed there. What followed was confusion, poor military strategy and ultimately failure.
