On May 1, 1960, an American U-2 spy plane was shot down over Soviet territory by a surface-to-air missile. The incident exposed the United States' covert aerial surveillance program and brought about the collapse of the Four Powers Paris Summit. The pilot, Francis Gary Powers, ejected from the plane and was captured and held in the USSR for near
