James Meredith and Integration of Ole Miss

James Meredith was denied entry into the University of Mississippi on Sept. 20, 1962, to enroll at the previously segregated school. After extensive negotiations between the federal government and the state of Mississippi, Meredith was finally allowed to attend class on Oct. 1.
