Israeli Invasion Uncorks Suez Crisis

The Suez crisis of 1956 began on Oct. 29 when Israeli forces invaded the Suez Canal Zone, backed by the combined armies of Britain and France. The Egyptian defense collapsed quickly but Egypt won the political battle when the Eisenhower Administration forced the invaders to withdraw. The political triumph heralded the heyday for Arab nationalism
