Allies Stage D-Day Landings in Normandy

On June 6, 1944, Allied troops carried out a massive amphibious assault on occupied France, following an overnight air drop of 24,000 troops. The landings saw over 160,000 troops and over 5,000 ships cross the English Channel and establish beach heads along a 50-mile stretch of the Normandy coast.
