In 1982, war broke out between Great Britain and Argentina over possession of the Falkland Islands, which lay off Argentina in the Atlantic. After 74 days of battle, Argentina surrendered to the British on June 14. Islanders were restored to British citizenship in 1983, though Argentina continues to claim sovereignty.
