China Takes Control of Hong Kong

Effective July 1, 1997, Hong Kong ceased to be a part of the British Empire. Hong Kong had been under British rule for 155 years when in 1979 progress began on transferring Hong Kong back to Chinese hands. Pessimism toward the transfer precipitated the emigration of over 1 million people.
