The Battle of Britain

In the summer of 1940, the German Luftwaffe launched an air campaign in attempt to neutralize and gain superiority over the Royal Air Force. German high command believed air superiority was crucial to an amphibious assault on Great Britain. It was the defining moment for the iconic Spitfire as British pilots turned back wave after wave of German bombers. The German failure eliminated the possibility of amphibious assault and capture of the British Isles.
